Siu A Chau Introduction

Siu A Chau is an island formed by Tombolo. On both sides of Tombolo are the Pak Sha Wan and Siu A Chau Wan. In addition to these two beaches, there is also Sum Wan and Tong Chai Wan. The island was once inhabited but is now deserted. The location of Siu A Chau is very remote, that even if there is a special boat departing from Hong Kong Island, the journey is very long, only a few tourists have visited the island. However, the strange rock scenery of this island occasionally attracts some people to visit, just like me and you.

Tanka People living in Siu A Chau in Ancient Times

Tanka People are active in Soko Islands in Siu A Chau in ancient times as there is rich catch in Soko Islands. The Tankas or you may call them boat people are traditionally lived on junks that have a traditional livelihood of fishing.

Stronghold of Cheung Po Tsai's Pirates

During the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty in 1811, Siu A Chau was the stronghold of Cheung Po Tsai's pirates. In 1810, Cheung Po Tsai accepted the Qing Dynasty's recruitment, and Siu A Chau was restored to inhabitation.

Acquired by Real Estate Developers for the Development of Tourism

In 1980, Tai A Chau and Siu A Chau were acquired by real estate developers for the development of tourism. The Real Estate Developers spent around 5 million HKD in total.

Detention Center for Vietnamese Boat People

In 1980, the Hong Kong government repurchased the land to build a detention center for Vietnamese boat people, accommodating 5,000 boat people until September 1996 closure.

Pak Sha Wan (Siu A Chau)

The North Bay of Siu A Chau is called Pak Sha Wan. The Shape of this Beach is U-Shaped, just like Siu A Chau Wan (the South Bay of Siu A Chau). In Chinese, Pak means White, while Sha means Sand, Pak Sha Wan is named that way probably because the sand here is so clean, soft and white.

How to Store the Low-level Radioactive Waste?

The Government believes that in the long run the low-level radioactive wastes should be stored in a purpose-built facility. After two years of construction, the Low-level Radioactive Waste Storage Facility was built at Siu A Chau, an island at southwest of Lantau Island. The Facility was successfully commissioned and began its operation in July 2005

How Long can the Low-level Radioactive Waste be Stored in Siu A Chau?

The Facility is purpose-built to meet the most stringent international standards for the safe storage and handling of low-level radioactive wastes. Its designed storage capacity is sufficient to accommodate the existing wastes and waste arising in Hong Kong for the next 100 years

How Much does the Facility Cost and How it Functions?

It comprises a 55 m long jetty, a shielded waste storage vault, a fully-equipped laboratory, an automatic control room, a wastewater management system and specially-designed waste reception and processing areas. The radiation levels inside and outside the Facility are continuously monitored to ensure the safe operation of the Facility. The Construction Cost is about 78 million Hong Kong Dollars
