Red Rocky Strait/Hung Shek Mun Introduction
Red Rocky Strait (Hung Shek Mun) is located in the east of Plover Cove Country Park at Double Haven. Red Rocky Strait (Hung Shek Mun) is famous for its red coloured sedimentary rock along the coastline of the Plover Cove Country Park. The rock here is predominantly red in colour due to the high presence of iron.
Hung Shek Mun Village History
Hung Shek Mun Village is now completely deserted, and the scale of the village is not large, only a few abandoned houses remain. According to a history record of Hung Shek Mun Village in 1911, there are in total 48 villagers at that time. The history of Hung Shek Mun village is not that long. The residents first lived by farming, and then built dams to raise fish.
Since the villagers of Hung Shek Mun have made great contributions to the anti-Japanese war, the Hong Kong government funded the construction of Hung Shek Mun Village Road to thank the villagers. In addition, there is also a reservoir that was built by the Water Affairs Department on January 4, 1972, which was under the Public Works Department at that time. Hung Shek Mun reservoir is part of the “Kat O Water Supply Project”, which is an extension of the Plover Cove Reservoir project.
In the past, most of the villagers in Hung Shek Mun used boat only as a transportation , but based on the old maps of Hung Shek Mun, there is also an ancient road running through Hung Shek Mun to the village that has been submerged by the Plover Cove Reservoir today.

Translating Hung Shek Mun to English, it means Red Rocky Shore, Hung = Red, Shek = Rocky, Mun = Strait.
Hung Shek Mun is a waterway that separates Hung Shek Mun Village from Wong Wan Chau. The rocks here are red, and the word “gate” means a strait, hence the name.
