Kau Yi is a Chinese Word which means Chair in English. Kau Yi Chau looks like an Ancient Chinese Traditional Chair, hence the Name
Kau Yi Chau Artificial Island – Lantau Tomorrow Vision
In 2012, the Hong Kong Government announced “Optimizing Land Supply Strategies: Reclamation Beyond Victoria Harbor and Development of Rock Caves” to study increasing land supply. It was also proposed to build artificial islands in central waters, which includes filling about 1,000 hectares of land in the waters near Hei Ling Chau and Kau Yi Chau.
In 2016, the Study “Hong Kong 2030+: Planning Vision and Strategies Beyond 2030” proposed to integrate the under utilised land in Mui Wo and add the newly added land on the artificial island to develop Hong Kong’s third core business district in the future.
In 2018, the Lantau Tomorrow Vision was formally proposed and relevant plans implemented in the Hong Kong Government Policy Address.

It is located to the East of Peng Chau and Siu Kau Yi Chau, and to the North of Hei Ling Chau and Chau Kung Island. Broadly Speaking, Kau Yi Chau (Tai Kau Yi Chau) is located to the East of Lantau Island and to the West of Hong Kong Island.

The 1,000-hectare Kau Yi Chau artificial island consists of three islands, called Islands A, B, and C, separated by a “Y-shaped” channel, one more artificial island than the previous proposal
